All You Need to Know About DOT SAP

A substance abuse professional is a person who helps DOT-regulated employees to return to their duty after a DOT violation has occurred- failed drug/ or alcohol test or refusal to test. They determine when a safety-sensitive employee has been prepared to return to work safely.

Why Do I Need a Substance Abuse Professional?

SAPs act like neutral parties and do not decide whether an employee should be terminated or re-hired. Those decisions are up to the employer of the company. A SAPs job is to evaluate and provide a personalized treatment and education plan for each individual with DOT protocol. In the DOT SAP Process, public safety is a mission. They conduct face-to-face evaluations to approve employees to return to duty. Temporary guidance on face-to-face evaluation has been issued during COVId-19. Qualified SAPs need to maintain specific qualifications.

The DOT SAP Return To Duty Process
The return to duty process includes the following steps:

Step-1: Initial SAP Evaluation
In this first step, substance abuse professional evaluates individuals since the employer may have not fired them. From this evaluation, the SAP finds out appropriate treatment and education for a particular individual and creates a plan. It refers to individual providers of the services laid out in the plan.
